I checked this out and 1/ it’s no different for individuals. it has to be a registered AU charity to be considered a donation 2/ it might be easier for a business although still a grey area so not advisable. Bottom line: no tax friendliness for AU donations. that won’t stop me from re-upping as a developer member but it makes the proposition less juicy for my fledgling business if it takes off. I imagine this must be true all over the world (outside the US)

We are now a trade association, not a charity. Payments from anyone worldwide are not going to be donations. Businesses can usually class membership dues to a trade association as a tax deductible expense (not a donation)

That’s for individuals

I’ll pass this along but I think the distinction here is that it is a deductible expense but there’s no extra tax credit (like you get when supporting charities). It’s a small amount so it’s not a big deal (and I’ll stay a supporter) but I could imagine a scenario where favourable tax credits would encourage even more support.

Gotcha, to my knowledge no country recognises charitable donations to orgs registered in different countries, so we’d need to set something up in lots of different countries for that to work

yep. I’ve experienced the same problem with other charities. Not an easy fix.
