2020-11-23T14:27:28.004800Z

getting used to a new keyboard today

2020-11-23T14:27:54.005400Z

made the usual blood sacrifice within 24 hours of arrival by slicing my finger with the bread knife

2020-11-23T14:27:59.005600Z

(I wouldn't recommend it)

2020-11-23T14:28:10.005900Z

(the cutting, the keyboard is good though)

mpenet 2020-11-23T14:30:13.006900Z

Which keyboard did you get?

2020-11-23T14:31:19.007600Z

Majestouch 2 with cherry MX red silent

dominicm 2020-11-23T14:33:29.008400Z

My atreus has finally dispatched from falba. Excited to put that together.

2020-11-23T14:48:40.008700Z

cool

2020-11-23T14:49:07.009300Z

I've got a plaster/bandaid on my left index finger. I keep getting lost b/c I can feel the little nubbbin for the f key

2020-11-23T14:49:18.009600Z

I keep typing stuff that is x places off

2020-11-23T14:49:42.010100Z

do other people here touch type and if so where/when did you learn?

dominicm 2020-11-23T15:02:39.010400Z

Gtypist is my friend

neotyk 2020-11-23T15:23:04.012500Z

@otform I was convinced I was touch typing until I bought top-less keyboard. I’ve learned by switching to Colemak, had to re-learn from scratch, so I did it good this time around. I don’t remember which app was supporting me on this journey.

2020-11-23T16:10:41.013400Z

I do end up having a look for things like {} and [] and () sometimes, but from the home row I'm OK on US and UK keyboards. I've slowed down from my 80wpm when just doing plain text tho.

2020-11-23T16:11:11.014Z

and I don't "properly" touch type as I hit the backspace key wayyyyy too many times. I couldn't do copy typing any more.

neotyk 2020-11-23T16:16:31.017100Z

for hitting backspace problem, solution is quite simple hit it with Meta/Alt whatever so you delete word and retype it correctly. Few times and no more mistakes in this particular world, or at least way less.

mpenet 2020-11-23T16:17:32.018500Z

I religiously did 1h typing lessons daily when I got my first atreus. I got rid of tons of bad habits in the process. Now I type way faster and more accurately than before, but I doubt I can say it is the layout change alone

mpenet 2020-11-23T16:18:47.020400Z

I guess it's similar rule to refactorings than brings performance improvements, it's more revisiting the old that helps than the main changes

2020-11-23T16:28:23.021400Z

I learned my asdf jkl; in year 7 at school (along with cooking, sewing, workshop, and art), and then retaught myself at university to write papers

dharrigan 2020-11-23T16:51:10.022400Z

I recall, when I was 11 years old (many many moons ago), checking a book out from the library - naturally, can't remember the name, but it was small, paperback, had keyboard exercises in it. I learnt to touch type using that. I do about 70wpm presently.

dharrigan 2020-11-23T16:52:01.022800Z

I had a commodore 64 to practice upon.

dharrigan 2020-11-23T16:53:37.023300Z

And I use a DAS Keyboard 4 Professional with Cherry Browns

ordnungswidrig 2020-11-23T17:34:40.024700Z

If you can adjust the layout i can strongly recommend to have ()[]{}<>\|/ on a layer, e.g. on hjklvbnmzuio

ordnungswidrig 2020-11-23T17:35:26.026100Z

That's what I have done and have forgotten the strange monkey chords to access { on a german macos.

2020-11-23T17:47:31.026700Z

why would I want ]}) ? When would I ever type them other than emojis? πŸ˜‰

ordnungswidrig 2020-11-23T18:20:49.028400Z

Yes, emojis. You can out them on separate layers, too :-) or have a macro which replaces :) with

raymcdermott 2020-11-23T20:13:53.029100Z

I can reliably do 10 words a minute. Seems like enough.
