Hello π
getting used to a new keyboard today
made the usual blood sacrifice within 24 hours of arrival by slicing my finger with the bread knife
(I wouldn't recommend it)
(the cutting, the keyboard is good though)
Which keyboard did you get?
Majestouch 2 with cherry MX red silent
My atreus has finally dispatched from falba. Excited to put that together.
cool
I've got a plaster/bandaid on my left index finger. I keep getting lost b/c I can feel the little nubbbin for the f key
I keep typing stuff that is x places off
do other people here touch type and if so where/when did you learn?
Gtypist is my friend
@otform I was convinced I was touch typing until I bought top-less keyboard. Iβve learned by switching to Colemak, had to re-learn from scratch, so I did it good this time around. I donβt remember which app was supporting me on this journey.
I do end up having a look for things like {} and [] and () sometimes, but from the home row I'm OK on US and UK keyboards. I've slowed down from my 80wpm when just doing plain text tho.
and I don't "properly" touch type as I hit the backspace key wayyyyy too many times. I couldn't do copy typing any more.
for hitting backspace problem, solution is quite simple hit it with Meta/Alt whatever so you delete word and retype it correctly. Few times and no more mistakes in this particular world, or at least way less.
I religiously did 1h typing lessons daily when I got my first atreus. I got rid of tons of bad habits in the process. Now I type way faster and more accurately than before, but I doubt I can say it is the layout change alone
I guess it's similar rule to refactorings than brings performance improvements, it's more revisiting the old that helps than the main changes
I learned my asdf jkl; in year 7 at school (along with cooking, sewing, workshop, and art), and then retaught myself at university to write papers
I recall, when I was 11 years old (many many moons ago), checking a book out from the library - naturally, can't remember the name, but it was small, paperback, had keyboard exercises in it. I learnt to touch type using that. I do about 70wpm presently.
I had a commodore 64 to practice upon.
And I use a DAS Keyboard 4 Professional with Cherry Browns
If you can adjust the layout i can strongly recommend to have ()[]{}<>\|/ on a layer, e.g. on hjklvbnmzuio
That's what I have done and have forgotten the strange monkey chords to access { on a german macos.
why would I want ]}) ? When would I ever type them other than emojis? π
#paredit4life
Yes, emojis. You can out them on separate layers, too :-) or have a macro which replaces :) with
I can reliably do 10 words a minute. Seems like enough.
