jasonbell 2020-12-30T13:54:52.306700Z

On 00:01 Friday 1st Jan do I need a passport to be on this channel? 🙂

borkdude 2020-12-30T14:03:53.307100Z

@jasonbell You only need one when you want to leave this channel

javahippie 2020-12-30T14:26:00.307600Z

I believe you need a passport if you want to cross the channel

I wasn’t asked for a passport when I joined this channel.

slipset 2020-12-30T15:07:10.309Z

But I was asked for a passport last time I visited the GB.

@jasonbell I'm pretty sure you can claim Irish citizenship as you've been living as a married person on the island of Ireland long enough

2020-12-30T15:15:07.310100Z

I think you only need to be resident for 5 years

2020-12-30T15:15:39.310700Z

I'm not sure where the "you are automagically British and Irish" at the same time kicks in and stops.

dharrigan 2020-12-30T15:57:00.310900Z

3 years if you're married

dharrigan 2020-12-30T15:58:22.311400Z

Having dual nationality is a very good thing

jasonbell 2020-12-30T16:03:29.311800Z

And is about to be scrapped if I what I saw today is correct.

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:04:38.312100Z

?

jasonbell 2020-12-30T16:08:53.314100Z

“Those born in Northern Ireland have a birthright to Irish citizenship, & Irish citzens retain EU citizenship rights. British citizen no longer have those rights, & there will a change in visiting, staying and working in the EU after 1st Jan.”

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:10:39.314900Z

That doesn't stop you from acquiring irish citizenship via your spouse

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:10:50.315200Z

It doesn't affect how the Irish Government gives out that right

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:11:32.316400Z

And the UK is one of the few countries that doesn't need you to give up its citizenship if you have more than 1 passport.

jasonbell 2020-12-30T16:11:32.316500Z

Marriage is not an automatic qualification. I know quite a few English ones married who’ve been declined duel.

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:12:07.317200Z

Where did they apply, dublin?

jasonbell 2020-12-30T16:12:26.317500Z

I don’t know but easy to find out.

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:13:16.317900Z

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs...

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:13:17.318100Z

The spouse or civil partner of an Irish citizen may apply for Irish citizenship through naturalisation after three years of marriage/civil partnership plus three years residence on the island of Ireland.

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:14:54.318700Z

Of course, after Brexit, not being an EU national....

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:19:15.319900Z

However, latest on the Department of Justice website still implies that being married to an irish citizen for at least 3 years (and resident on the island of ireland for 3 years) allows you to apply for citizenship. No updates/caveats for UK people because of Brexit.

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:19:47.320900Z

So <shrug>, can't comment on why the people you know got declined, yet the rules seem to be in place.

jasonbell 2020-12-30T16:19:55.321100Z

I’ll look on Jan 4th. 🙂

dharrigan 2020-12-30T16:19:59.321300Z

🙂

jasonbell 2020-12-30T16:20:08.321600Z

@dharrigan Not sure either.

2020-12-30T17:45:58.323100Z

Married to an Irish citizen and resident on the island of Ireland. I didn't qualify due to not being resident
