dharrigan 2020-11-27T08:28:00.149100Z

Good Morning. Yes, today, the SO gets a new iPhone 11. Thatโ€™s fine. Her current phone is 4 years old. She holds on to these things.

danm 2020-11-30T10:01:19.011700Z

I love how this counts as 'She holds onto these things' ๐Ÿ˜‰ ./me looks at 6-year-old iPhone 6s

danm 2020-11-30T10:01:57.011900Z

Going to have to replace it soon though, the battery is rubbish despite having been replaced not that long ago. It keeps powering off randomly when out in the cold

dharrigan 2020-11-30T11:00:20.015900Z

Didn't the iPhone 6S come out in 2015?

dharrigan 2020-11-30T11:00:42.016100Z

September 9, 2015 according to wikipedia...

danm 2020-11-30T11:01:15.016300Z

Huh, you're right. OK, only 5 years old

dharrigan 2020-11-30T11:01:19.016500Z

I had to buy one of those cases that have a built-in-battery last year, since yes, it would only last a couple of hours with it's regular battery. I blame her constant use of instagram, whatsapp, messenger....

dharrigan 2020-11-30T11:01:39.016700Z

a hex upon these apps!

danm 2020-11-30T11:02:18.017600Z

There just hasn't been a compelling reason to upgrade except now because the battery life is crap. I would have got an 11 except I wanted 5G support for future proofing as I hope it will last me another 5+ years

danm 2020-11-30T11:02:49.017800Z

I would have got a 12 already but we are planning a house move and various other things so need savings to spend on that as it is still functional

danm 2020-11-30T11:03:12.018Z

Had forgotted about those battery cases though. That could be a good iterim fix. Ta!

dharrigan 2020-11-30T11:03:36.018400Z

It certainly has extended the life of her phone for 1 year

dharrigan 2020-11-30T11:04:26.019100Z

I think it'll be another 5 or so years before 5G is the "norm". In fact, my android just told me last week that it won't be getting any new updates since it's too old....maybe time to upgrade that....this time next year ๐Ÿ™‚

danm 2020-11-30T11:17:25.027700Z

I still remember when I had a 3G-only phone after 4G started to become a thing. They cannibalised chunks of the 3G... spectrum? Or maybe just how they were handling the signals at the base stations, not sure. But my 3G performance absolutely dropped off a cliff even loading the same sites etc after 4G stared to be rolled out. Don't want that again, so I want a phone that's 5G ready even if I don't live anywhere that uses it for a good few years

danm 2020-11-30T11:19:21.029500Z

Though there are signs around Manchester saying it's already been rolled out here for some providers, and my next door neighbour is an industrial sparky doing a lot of the work setting up the kit, so hopefully I'd be able to take advantage quite soon

dharrigan 2020-11-27T08:28:15.149400Z

I have friends who buy new phones every yearโ€ฆ

mccraigmccraig 2020-11-27T08:50:22.150400Z

ha, my SO doesn't care about phones - she was searching for a new blowtorch last night and forcing me to research the differences btw butane / propane / acetylene

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:27:15.152600Z

So you get "Black Friday" in the UK? I figured that since Brits don't do Thanksgiving, they also wouldn't do the crazy sales...

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:29:10.154100Z

(we actually went to friends for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, because they'd gotten COVID-tested to see if they were safe to host us -- they got the results midday (negative) so we didn't have to eat reheated Indian leftovers for my wife's 60th birthday ๐Ÿ™‚ )

jasonbell 2020-11-27T18:38:51.154900Z

@seancorfield Yeah Black Friday kinda exists but itโ€™s not taken as seriously for bargains (as they usually aren;t actual bargains).

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:40:59.156200Z

Today is the official start of "Christmas Season" in the US so lots of houses around us are already fully-decorated for the holidays (we don't bother). It's a pretty strange time of the year for a Brit here...

jasonbell 2020-11-27T18:41:35.156900Z

Northern Ireland is in lockdown and all non essential shops are shut. So Christmas shopping went out of the window from 00:01 this morning ๐Ÿ™‚

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:42:22.157200Z

The rest of the UK went into lockdown a week or so back, right?

jasonbell 2020-11-27T18:43:00.158100Z

Yeah but NI has itโ€™s own set of rules.

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:43:29.158400Z

Here they just closed gyms, indoor dining, and a few other things (again) but the shops are all still open -- despite the soaring case numbers ๐Ÿ˜ž

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:44:03.158800Z

Whereabouts in NI are you? (I was born and raised there in the '60s)

jasonbell 2020-11-27T18:44:58.159100Z

@seancorfield Limavady, on the north coast

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:46:07.159500Z

Ah, not far from Coleraine where I lived for a while...

jasonbell 2020-11-27T18:46:35.160Z

In Coleraine a lot. Do most shopping there. Take walks in Portstewart and Portrush

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:47:29.160700Z

We had a holiday caravan almost on the beach in Portstewart for several years. Lovely part of the world.

seancorfield 2020-11-27T18:48:49.161300Z

(I think it was Portstewart... it was a long time ago, I'd have to go check my dad's autobiography to be sure)

dharrigan 2020-11-27T21:57:55.000600Z

I herald from that part of the country too...a bit nearer the western side...

dharrigan 2020-11-27T21:58:46.001100Z

I do like taking the ferry from Quigley's Point to Magillian and exploring the fine fine beaches and coastline

dharrigan 2020-11-27T22:00:04.001500Z

The Wild Atlantic Way is probably my most favourite of places to drive around
