Good Morning!

seancorfield 2021-02-25T05:27:23.064400Z

Mornin'!

seancorfield 2021-02-25T05:28:15.065Z

Can't believe it's almost March and nearly a year since we went into lockdown. Strange world.

dharrigan 2021-02-25T05:41:47.065300Z

Indeed. The new norm is the old norm.

dharrigan 2021-02-25T05:42:47.065500Z

oh, the offspring is awake

dharrigan 2021-02-25T05:45:37.065700Z

My employer is getting rid of our office, so lockdown or no lockdown won't make much difference to me

dharrigan 2021-02-25T08:25:39.067800Z

We're in the same boat. The lease on our office has not been renewed.

thomas 2021-02-25T08:32:35.068200Z

morning. I haven't worked at an office for almost a year now.

djm 2021-02-25T08:37:33.070100Z

I wasn't keen on it when we started WFH last year (I still haven't got the hang of pair programming via zoom), but now I'm glad we're not going back

djm 2021-02-25T08:38:38.071Z

On the other hand, I'm currently working on trying to persuade people to hire me to write Clojure, which is not an option locally, so places switching to remote work is a plus from that point of view

danm 2021-02-25T09:04:41.071200Z

Morning

2021-02-25T10:14:49.073700Z

Morning. We renewed the lease on our office (and I donโ€™t quite understand why) but I donโ€™t predict that weโ€™ll all be going back there, given that lots of us, including me, have moved out of London in the past year.

2021-02-25T10:16:50.075200Z

I really didn't like wfh beforehand but now I don't think I'd want to go back to an office full time

2021-02-25T10:17:10.076Z

I think a lot of it before was being the odd one out, as in, everyone else in the office and one person wfh means that one person misses out on most of the decisions/conversations

2021-02-25T10:17:23.076300Z

I've been working from home for the past few years, and I wasn't planning on going back to an office any time soon... It'll be nice to be able to go for a sandwich and a coffee for lunch, or a movie or gig in the evening though!

morning

2021-02-25T10:19:31.078200Z

Yeah, when the interaction is mainly in-person, being remote doesn't work well. In the last job I had on an office half of the team was in another office, so we used to pair in the phone half of the time, and stand-ups, retros, etc. were on the phone, and it worked quite well.

alexlynham 2021-02-25T10:19:57.078400Z

i've been working from home/an office of my choosing for a couple of years, i'll probably start going back into my shared office mon/fri but def not full time

Good morning

2021-02-25T10:42:34.082100Z

flexible work is great , don't wanna miss the friday evenings piss up

mccraigmccraig 2021-02-25T10:49:43.083Z

my travel time to the office is ~2hrs... the homeward journey makes friday evening piss ups a lot less attractive

alexlynham 2021-02-25T10:58:42.083100Z

yeah when you're in london, you get drunk and then spend two hours on the pendolino regretting the decision

alexlynham 2021-02-25T10:58:53.083200Z

still, the ride home from stockport was usually brisk

dharrigan 2021-02-25T10:59:07.083400Z

I used to live in Stockport

dharrigan 2021-02-25T10:59:12.083600Z

and work there too!

Conor 2021-02-25T11:04:49.083900Z

I wonder if the Viking tapas place is still there

2021-02-25T11:05:09.084200Z

viking tapas? wait what ...

Conor 2021-02-25T11:05:41.084300Z

Apparently not, "Vinabod has announced its immediate closure, leaving locals 'gutted'"

alexlynham 2021-02-25T11:07:10.084400Z

yeah sadly it closed

alexlynham 2021-02-25T11:07:31.084500Z

it was ace, but i think they had planned on making their money on the food and AFAICT it was just people buying lager

alexlynham 2021-02-25T11:07:44.084600Z

i ordered mead but i imagine their margins on that weren't great

maleghast 2021-02-25T12:13:19.085900Z

2021-02-25T12:15:29.088300Z

It's still going on a bit, but hopefully it wont spark any volcanoes! I want to get back to the UK next month

this was my experience too, I was mainly working in a Manchester office for a company with pretty much everyone else in London, totally changed after lockdown

seancorfield 2021-02-25T16:42:08.092100Z

Re: remote - I've been 100% remote for about 13 years now. Current company has been 100% remote for nearly a decade. Several staff moved back home to Europe from California and no one actually noticed for months!
