Just found an example (rare!) of someone using the sort of 3d animated surface that George and I were using for climate data. It's from the NYT, who as usual do a fantastic, polished job of it. They also (click through the slideshow to see) animate the camera in order to effectively give a tour of the visualization to demonstrate various points.
