morning
Good morning.
Morning
moaning
@korny: have you been talking to my stomach? That's all it's done today.
Hello London Clojurians - how’s ‘Ole Blighty today..?
sunny and cold
It was dark and cold when I cycled to work this morning so it’s improved!
sounds like somebody's a basement worker.
no just an early starter…the sun had not risen
morning
Ow - that’s too early. I just got better lights as it’s dark when I get home, but thankfully I don’t have to leave home until 7:45
(I really miss my Melbourne commute, where I had to leave by 8:30, cycled along the river to work, and the days were never as stpidly short as here)
The many disadvantages of higher latitude…North or South. Mind I love having an extra 45 mins daylight in the Summer compared with London when I’m at home in Newcastle…not so good in winter of course!
I tend to enjoy both, early and late sunsets. But then again, I never had a long commute in the dark.
My commute is about an hour up here in the north (depending on traffic), one thing I have discovered recently is that It feels so alien driving in the dark .. Not done it for awhile
At a previous job I used to have to leave at 0500, and wasn’t home until around 2330, so all I did was driving in the dark
but sunsets are beautiful :simple_smile:
@gjnoonan: wow, and I thought I got up early and did long days! Did you work down the salt mines!
morning all
@jonpither: Hello there; long time no chat :simple_smile:
I don’t miss long commutes - I have a 7 minute walk at the moment
dont want to rub it in but my commute is around 13 seconds. Leaving the house seems like such a chore now
Almost the best thing about my current job though 😞
@agile_geek: ha kind of, I moonlighted in Mental health at a hospital/institution.. Still in the habit of long days and being up early though, had around 1hr 30mins sleep last night 😕
Oh… if we are going to show off...
@gjnoonan: I used to only get that much sleep until my early 30s, but it was killing me / not good for me, so I went on a full on mission to change my sleep cycle now I am an 8 hour sleeper, when I get the chance anyway :simple_smile:
@afhammad: I used to use my commute as exercise. Cycling 10 miles each way everyday. Don’t cycle so often down here.
I have a 20 second commute.
@agile_geek: I am using my commute the same way, good warm up before workday
@agile_geek, @quentin: yeh thats smart, I got myself a TRX set recently, attached to a door to force myself to work out when i need a break.
@agile_geek: @quentin I miss my pre / post work cycling too...
Sigh. 70 minute commute here - 45 minutes train, 20 minutes cycling. At least I’m getting lots of exercise!
@korny: And presumably a nice chunk of reading on the train, no?
And there’s a big thread at work on remote working, so I can dream of a better future
I do miss how much reading I could do when I had 2 train rides a day 😉
maleghast: you can still do it if you want 😉
@maleghast: yep, love the reading time - I’d hate to do the same in a car
@quentin: I am 7 minutes walk__ from the office in one of the most dangerous cycling cities in the WORLD
I recently got myself a free standing punching bag that I put against a wall with some foam behind it. Not sure how many offices have the space for it but it doesn’t actually require a lot. Taking breaks and doing some punching feels good.
short answer - no I couldn't
@korny: audiobooks!
@pupeno: That is something we need in my office
@maleghast: interns work just as well :P
@korny: I am NEVER going to commute by car ever again if I can help it
@pupeno: I used to do that, and podcasts, but it’s not the same
@pupeno: 😄 I used to use an empty office in one of companies I worked for to do Karate Kata in when taking a break…got some funny looks tho!
@pupeno: sounds fun, mind linking me to one of those online?
@xlevus: No interns at the moment, just members of staff, and even here in the Philippines, punching the staff is seen as inappropriate
@maleghast: it was surprisingly affordable.
@agile_geek: you do karate?
@afhammad: what do you mean?
@maleghast: dangerous city = London? I find my city cycling is OK, as long as I stay on back streets
@korny: No, Manila
@pupeno: used to, Shotokan and Go-Ryu
ah, that makes sense
hehe
@pupeno: the punching bag
@agile_geek: in London, or up norf'?
Trying to find a Dojo here. They're all pretty shitty sounding. One advertised having black belts as young as 4 years old. Ugh.
@afhammad: I got this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NLDZBUM I got this gloves but I’m not happy with them: http://www.amazon.co.uk/EVO-Leather-combat-Gloves-Martial/dp/B00SI4TWE0/ref=pd_sim_200_2 and I bought 45kg of sand from Argos: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3650574.htm
@xlevus: Karate? In and around Newcastle (I was briefly a Sensei)
Osu!
The sand was slightly wet, which I felt was cheating when you sell it by kg, but I cared about weight, not volume anyway. I found 45kg to be the bare minimum.
Putting the sand in was really messy.
@pupeno: thanks. yeh no room for that here, sadly my office is in the living room, wife would not approve of such an ornament
One of my partners got these gloves: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00SJ6391O?ref_=pd_ybh_18 which I think are better.
@agile_geek: when are you going start a Karate dojo? agile sensei.
We do have it in the livingroom and I use http://www.amazon.co.uk/Interlocking-Black-Soft-Exercise-Floor/dp/B005F3AEI0/ref=sr_1_13 to protect the floor and wall.
@afhammad: been 10 years since I trained. Don’t think joints could take stress anymore!
RIP knees.
I’ll stick to cycling. And code dojos.
@korny: 😄
