morning y'all

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T08:32:54.000531Z

Winter is truly coming, 4 degrees currently up here

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T08:33:07.000532Z

My favourite time of year though

xlevus 2015-10-23T08:35:19.000533Z

yesss

xlevus 2015-10-23T08:35:29.000534Z

Wife said it's going to be a cold and snowy one this year.

xlevus 2015-10-23T08:35:40.000535Z

She was unimpressed with my excitement

xlevus 2015-10-23T08:36:02.000536Z

(She's from Northern Australia, they don't do cold)

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T08:39:39.000537Z

lol

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T08:40:03.000538Z

Aye apparently it will be the worst one for a few years .. but they say that every year 😕

thomas 2015-10-23T08:59:25.000539Z

I never understand that... they can't really forecast the weather for next week, but somehow they know what is going to happen in a few months time.

jamiei 2015-10-23T09:15:41.000540Z

pupeno 2015-10-23T09:16:12.000541Z

Good morning.

agile_geek 2015-10-23T09:24:42.000542Z

@thomas: any forecast much past 5 days (10 tops) is so low in confidence statistically as to be almost useless.

thomas 2015-10-23T09:26:00.000543Z

I once heard that if you say the weather today is the same as yesterday you are correct 60% of the time.... quite a good hit rate IMHO

thomas 2015-10-23T09:26:09.000544Z

(better then playing the lottery)

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T10:04:31.000545Z

@thomas: does that work the other way round, saying the weather tomorrow will be the same as today? I wonder what the deviation is

thomas 2015-10-23T10:18:52.000546Z

@gjnoonan: that should work as well is my understanding. and an accurate forecast can be off by 2 degrees as well.

thomas 2015-10-23T10:18:58.000547Z

so the margin is quite big.

pupeno 2015-10-23T10:19:40.000548Z

I’d guess that changes drastically depending on the location.

agile_geek 2015-10-23T10:30:21.000549Z

@thomas: @gjnoonan bias will tend to give you that effect. You should read ‘Clojure For Data Science’ by my mate @henrygarner for a much more scientific explanation of bias!

thomas 2015-10-23T10:31:07.000550Z

there are too many Clojure books out there now.... I can't keep up with it....

pupeno 2015-10-23T10:32:07.000551Z

It’s almost like the language is going mainstream!

pupeno 2015-10-23T10:32:31.000552Z

My magic trackpad is disconnecting itself every other minute.

pupeno 2015-10-23T10:32:38.000553Z

This is driving me crazy.

thomas 2015-10-23T10:37:54.000554Z

hmm Clojure going mainstream? time to find something else....

pupeno 2015-10-23T10:38:07.000555Z

You hipster!

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T10:48:03.000556Z

@agile_geek: It’s on my to-read pile, maybe I’ll give it a look sooner than later

thomas 2015-10-23T10:54:14.000557Z

surely real Hipster use Cobol... so retro!!!!

thomas 2015-10-23T10:55:02.000558Z

and use punch cards of course

korny 2015-10-23T11:00:11.000559Z

I’m from Southern Australia - don’t find the cold here to be particularly bad, to be honest. The lack of sunlight is more of a hassle!

korny 2015-10-23T11:01:24.000560Z

ObClojure - anyone got suggestions for showing simple 3d visualizations in clojure? Quil was my first thought, but are there others?

pupeno 2015-10-23T11:03:35.000561Z

korny: are you aware of SAD, sunlamps and if you are into experimental stuff, EnChroma?

xlevus 2015-10-23T11:04:18.000562Z

might get a SAD lamp this winter

pupeno 2015-10-23T11:07:13.000563Z

I am very lucky in that weather has almost no effect on my mood. Then again, maybe I’m just moody all the time.

xlevus 2015-10-23T11:08:25.000564Z

I think the entire of london gets somewhat grumpier in winter

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T11:17:51.000565Z

I’m a yorkshireman, I’ll keep my thoughts of londoners to myself 😄

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T11:17:54.000566Z

I jest

xlevus 2015-10-23T11:18:20.000567Z

It's ok, we wouldn't ask you to part with anything. We know how hard it is for you guys :P

gjnoonan 2015-10-23T11:18:33.000570Z

ha

xlevus 2015-10-23T11:23:40.000571Z

pupeno 2015-10-23T11:23:46.000572Z

I do.

xlevus 2015-10-23T11:23:49.000573Z

pupeno 2015-10-23T11:24:03.000574Z

xlevus 2015-10-23T11:24:10.000575Z

I do

xlevus 2015-10-23T11:24:47.000576Z

I was shocked to see you pop up on Facebook

pupeno 2015-10-23T11:24:57.000577Z

korny 2015-10-23T11:48:01.000581Z

pupeno: I’ve seen SAD lights, I had a cheap one when working in Glasgow. But really, it’s not a big thing, just an annoyance; it’s been very very grey the last few weeks. Melbourne in winter is pretty cold, but there’s usually a fair bit of sun still (and the nights aren’t nearly as long!)

xlevus 2015-10-23T11:52:46.000582Z

"I need a lamp to make me slightly happy. Oh god this is the worst, I hate my life"

korny 2015-10-23T13:15:46.000583Z

korny 2015-10-23T13:15:56.000584Z

Life. Don’t talk to me about life.
