@paulspencerwilliams: hope you enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing you there.
@agile_geek: and me you. Are many from the channel going? It’s my first time at Skillsmatter - it’s a bit of a trek for a Brummie 😉
@paulspencerwilliams: quite a few on here are going…and a number are speaking! It’s further for pseudo-geordie like me 😉
@agile_geek: true! I’m looking forward to the schedule being announced. I’m new to CLJS and have been blown away by the tooling in particular re-frame and figwheel. My company has currently classified React as too immature, so I’m keen to hear experience reports that debunk this. In all fairness, the comparison is against ultra-mature Spring.
@paulspencerwilliams: we have a few talks around cljs, including one of my favourite speakers talking about architecting cljs apps so think of some questions for them.
@agile_geek: yeah, will do
@paulspencerwilliams: hi Paul, looking forward to meeting you at #C075TNSSC
@malcolmsparks: and you. How many people typically go? As I said, I’ve not had chance to visit Skillsmatter before?
I think they're doing 300 t-shirts, I think it will be 200+
birmingham's not that far away - our office is in MK, almost half way there - and @agile_geek commutes from Newcastle!
Yeah, not everyday of course…but I’m just weird! 😄
Agreed, although it’s difficult travelling to London when not working their - cost and time!
I would like to attend more Clojure meetups thought. I’ve been to several Extreme Tuesdays and really enjoyed the enthusiasm / forward thinking of London.
@paulspencerwilliams: do you know of any clojure activity in the b'ham area? Just interested, it's close enough from MK for me to pop up occasionally. I like Birmingham a lot, have lived in Sparkhill, Selly Park, Edgbaston and Smethwick.
I run the Birmingham Function Programming meetup. There’s been a few attempts previously at an FP meetup, but they’ve tended to fizzle out. We’ve had 3 sessions so far - 1 on Scala, an intro to FP using Scala, and Phil Trelwell came up to do an awesome F# session about 6 weeks ago. I’ve scheduled a session on re-frame, and Datomic on Tuesday 8th Dec, although I’m awaiting feedback about availability and location atm.
Birmingham is tough, many firms around here are primarily C#, VB and PHP/Wordpress. There’s pockets of Java around Warwick (where I work) but little else.
I think I could make the 8th Dec one, let me know if you get a confirm on the location
Yeah, will do - will obviously announce on this channel, but will wait until midweek, to gauge feasibility.
MK isn’t too bad, I’ve ridden (road bike) there from Leamington a few times, a colleague lives nearby.
Unbelievably I found a company up here in Newcastle that does a little Clojure (Orange Bus). On subject of FP meet ups, I’ve just talked a friend of mine here in Newcastle area to start one. First, meeting in 17th November (clashes with my #C08P6MXC7 meet) and as it’s mid week anyway I can rarely go.
@agile_geek: what is the tech scene like up there?
Lots of Digital companies
Quite a few meetups (nothing compared with London)
There are a lot of .NET and Java ppl as Accenture and HP both have delivery centres
in NEwcastle
Also DWP and HMRC do a bit of Scala
Actually, Brum has a fair number of meetups, typically attended by frustrated devs not using their beloved tech at work. It’s purely the companies that are behind.
Yeah, we have a fair Scala contingent, although I get the feeling their mainly consultants that work from home or commute to London.
@paulspencerwilliams: exactly same here
Lots of talent coming out of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria and Sunderland Uni’s (plus Teeside not far away) some stay in area but not as much as I’d like.
@agile_geek: Birmingham Uni has a strong CS school, but similarly many grads migrate to London or Manchester.
Newcastle and Durham have strong stats courses so Data Science may be the future. Also, Newcastle have a Cloud Computing Degree (which also covers some Data Engineering)
@paulspencerwilliams: Got to go. Seek me out at #C075TNSSC!
@agile_geek: will do.
