Superman feels like a pretty safe option.

solf 2021-02-21T10:01:24.019400Z

A man walks into a rooftop bar and takes a seat next to another guy. “What are you drinking?” he asks the guy. “Magic beer,” he says. “Oh, yeah? What’s so magical about it?” Then he shows him: He swigs some beer, dives off the roof, flies around the building, then finally returns to his seat with a triumphant smile. “Amazing!” the man says. “Lemme try some of that!” The man grabs the beer. He downs it, leaps off the roof – and plummets 15 storeys to the ground. The bartender shakes his head. “You know, you’re a real jerk when you’re drunk, Superman.” (copy pasted from somewhere, very old joke)

I didn't manage to install my Linux distro as a dual boot on my laptop, but virtualization worked, are there any big downsides for developing in a vm? Or any things I should look out for?

solf 2021-02-21T09:59:20.019200Z

What's your host OS? Generally speaking, the downsides of working in a vm are sluggish UI (this is the big one), harder to have direct access to hardware, GPU acceleration, a bit less raw power. If you're using windows, you should try WSL2. If you're on a mac, I would personally just use osx (although I prefer linux).

I've worked quite a bit in linux vms inside a linux host, this works well for my tools (terminal centric). I've tried to do similar things with Mac as the host but I found the performance lackluster even for simpler tasks. Also you might run possibly run into some quirks with networking and VPN software but otherwise I agree that GUIs are where you see the biggest difference.

Mno 2021-02-21T10:33:29.019900Z

Host system is Windows10. Dang that’s what I was afraid of… I’m going to need to work with a VPN

Mno 2021-02-21T10:33:53.020100Z

I’ve seen people run into some issues with WSL so I’ve been reluctant to try it, mostly because I have very little knowledge of windows development

Mno 2021-02-21T11:22:28.020600Z

I’ll probably give installing a different distro a try..

solf 2021-02-21T12:07:39.020800Z

WSL2 =/= WSL, it has less issues

solf 2021-02-21T12:11:49.021Z

Well, that's what I heard, haven't tried WSL personally. I've succesfully switched to a WSL2 setup though. The only annoying issue so far, is that putting your laptop to sleep will crash any GUI apps you're running from WSL2, that means emacs in my case. If you're not running emacs you'll probably not need to run a GUI from WSL2 though.

solf 2021-02-21T12:13:56.021200Z

I don't know about the VPN issue though... but WSL2 has Microsoft trying to make it work as well as possible, it might have improvements on that front compared to standard VM.

emilaasa 2021-02-21T12:32:20.021500Z

I haven't tried VPN and windows host with linux vm, might be fine. I just dealt with quite a mess on Mac. Quick googling to feed my confirmation bias: https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/issues?q=is%3Aissue+vpn+ But as with most things I'd probably try it before getting too worried - it might work great as well.

I'm sponsoring an OSS project now, and I want to sponsor some more projects. But I'm also looking for some geekwear, like some nice tshirts or coffee mugs. Is there some way to combine these intrests?

Mno 2021-02-21T15:30:33.023900Z

Yeah I tried live booting the usb with Pop and Manjaro, couldn’t get to the welcome screen on either.

Mno 2021-02-21T15:32:05.024100Z

I guess I’ll give WSL2 a go.. and worst case scenario I know at least I can attempt dealing with the VM vpn troubles

Mno 2021-02-21T15:32:54.024300Z

Thanks for the input guys
